PostHog is a well-established open-source product analytics platform that has been adding an AI observability layer — traces, logs, and context capture for agent runs sitting next to the session replay and funnel analytics the repo is known for. For teams already on PostHog the new AI instrumentation is a low-friction add. For teams not yet on it, the proposition is consolidating a stack that might currently be Mixpanel plus a separate LLM tracing tool plus a feature-flag service into one self-hosted deployment. The AI observability feature is the genuinely new angle here — everything else has been in the repo for years. The reservation: PostHog is a serious infrastructure commitment, not a weekend install. Self-hosted requires real ops attention. The cloud version removes that friction but reintroduces the vendor relationship. -> Best for: SaaS team of 2-5 already thinking about shipping an AI feature and wanting observability without a second vendor.
